Listed below are the 2012 Diabetes Institute classes and course descriptions. Check back often for news and updates on new offerings in our schedule. All classes are for adult patients with diabetes and diabetes-related complications.

Diabetes Support Group Education Series

Support Group guest speaker 2012 presentations will be on: diet & meal planning; weight loss and weight control; diabetes related health care needs for heart and kidney disease; eye, foot and dental care; tips on improving your blood sugar control; and how to handle stress and anxiety. All sessions will be under the guidance of a certified diabetes educator.

Insulin Forward: Insulin Education & Training Workshop

Insulin Forward & Sensors is a workshop for 8-10 patients who use daily insulin injections and want to improve their skills in carb counting, using insulin sensitivity factors and insulin to carb ratios. Workbooks will be supplied. You may choose to try a CGM-24 hour glucose-monitoring device for 3-4 days after the course per medical coverage. This device can help you improve your diabetes self care. No medication changes will be made during this workshop

Lose It! Healing Your Food Cravings & Weight Loss Course

In July 2010 the New York Times reported that the St. Joseph Diabetes Institute's “Healing Your Food Cravings weight reduction course is revolutionary, educational, and outlandishly fun!” In 2011, 43 St. Joseph Diabetes Center course participants together lost more than 400 pounds in just eight months! Now it is your turn. Registration is open to 24 adults. You may request an application form via email or at the St. Joseph Diabetes Institute office, 907-1836.

Our extremely successful weight loss course is specifically for diabetes patients. This year’s course will cover the skills of the “Lose it” weight loss system, diabetes dieting and cooking, how to successfully reduce calorie intake, weight loss behavioral education, acceptance and commitment training, mindfulness (eating and behavioral skills training), glucose monitoring for weight loss and insulin safety. Patients will also learn how to reduce diabetes related stress and anxiety while improving their quality of life with happiness and mindfulness training.


The Lose It app on an iPodThis course will include the use of hand held iPod technology with software applications that will track calorie intake, exercise activity, glucose management, nutrition consumption, and weight loss goals.


All patients will receive an initial six hours of group medical and nutritional-educational training during the initial two months classes. The course includes the loan of an iPod for personal use during the entire eight-month course. Participants and their family members will also be shown how to use the Lose It application on their own home based laptop or computer systems.

Diabetes Meal Planning

Learn about diabetic-friendly meal planning from Julie Benoit, registered dietitian. Topics: meal balance and meal regularity, carbohydrates and how they affect blood sugar, and portion control. Participants will see a cooking demonstration and be provided with instructions on the recipe prepared. General nutrition questions as time allows.

Help Yourself: To a Better Diabetes Office Visit

Lori Downs, RN, CDE will help you with your diabetes care needs so your office visits with your family doctor are more effective. Increase your diabetes knowledge and skills on how, why and when of the: proper use of your diabetes medications that you use (each and every day); diet-nutrition-cooking skills; understanding your diabetes laboratory reports; the need for proper eye examinations, diabetic foot exams, and skin care; how to obtain diabetes medical supplies and how to talk about “your diabetes issues” with your family medical provider one-on-one.

Tai Chi for Diabetes

A two-day workshop for instructors and patients or students. The course was designed by Paul Lam, MD to help you improve your glucose control, expand your flexibility and muscle strength, increase heart and lung function, align posture, improve balance. Tai Chi also helps with anxiety and relaxation.

Previous Tai Chi experience is not necessary. This course is for diabetes educators, Tai Chi teachers and advanced students, exercise instructors, and diabetes patients who wish to develop a low impact exercise program that will assist in diabetes and arthritis conditions. Course includes a Tai Chi for Diabetes DVD for each participant.

DATES AND TIMES: July 14 & 15, 2012 (9am to 5pm each day)


COST: $225 ($200 if paid by June 1, 2012). TCHC members will receive an additional 10% discount. Applications available in the St. Joseph Diabetes Institute office

Weight Management & Diabetes Cooking Tips

Cooking skills and hands-on-activities will highlight this class. You will learn strategies for weight management from Julie Benoit, registered dietitian. Key topics: weight loss strategies, physical activity, portion control, and healthy holiday eating tips. Recipes will be provided for low-calorie, delicious, diabetic-friendly foods.
