Healing Your Food Cravings with Reduced Calorie Diets

Adults with diabetes are at a higher risk for poor eating habits. The danger of poor eating habits and improper insulin use can lead to severe long-term medical conditions and consequences.
If you are struggling with overeating and improper eating habits it can add to the feelings of isolation, loneliness and fear. This combination is often associated with depression, shame and an intense fear of gaining weight. Discussing these issues with your doctors, family or friends can seem to be very difficult for diabetes patients and non diabetics.
We will provide you with the latest research findings and we will help you with new strategies that you can use for preventing and overcoming the problem of overeating.
New information will be presented in the proper use of diets, exercise, safe weight loss programs, proper and safe use of nutritional supplements and how to handle mood disorders effectively and safely. We will also provide materials for dietary and meal planning and home based exercise activities. We will demonstrate how to use new technologies for successful weight loss and exercise management with computer based and hand held device software/programs.

DATES/TIMES (Choose one): Thursday, April 22, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. or Monday, May 17, 1 - 3 pm

Registration: Limited to 24 adults per session (call to register or mail in application)

Fee: $10 per person (registration will be accepted for only one session)

Tai Chi for Diabetes

Based on the Sun style of Tai Chi Ch’uan, but incorporating Yang style forms as well, Tai Chi for Diabetes is designed to stimulate the qi (life energy) moving through the meridians (energy pathways) of the body which travel through the lungs, spleen, and kidneys. Ancient Chinese medicine indicated that a deficiency of moisture in these organs caused diabetes. Tai Chi when done properly can reduce stress, help control glucose levels, and improve the movement of qi through the body. This in turn can help those afflicted with diabetes to live happier, healthier lives.

The class is based on the Tai Chi for Health Programs of Dr. Paul Lam. When this exercise is done properly, and with the correct instruction, it can also provide protection to the joints, improve mobility, relieve pain and stiffness, and improve cardiovascular fitness which will in turn enhance overall health.

The Presenter, Rev. Dr. Bruce M. Young may be contacted at 207-262-1135 for more information about the course.

Those wishing to participate should wear loose fitting clothes and shoes with good support. This exercise program, at its most extreme, is equivalent to a brisk walk, but participants can also do the form while seated in a chair.

WHO: Limited to adults who have diabetes

DATE: Tuesday, October 19, 26, Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23

TIME: 1:30 to 3 p.m..

COST: $25 per person - Registration required

LOCATION: St. Joseph Healthcare Diabetes Institute of Behavioral Medicine, 900 Broadway, Bldg. 1, Bangor, Maine 04401 (in the Willette Conference Room).
